Images of Istria

Istria has a temperate climate, much influenced by the Mediterranean and the changing direction of the winds.

Istria has characteristic winds which play a large part in dictating climate. The Bura is a north-eastern cold wind, the Scirocco, a hot wind blowing from the south bringing the rain, and the Mistral is landward breeze blowing from the mainland to the sea bringing fresh air. The average air temperature in the coldest period of the year is generally about 6°C; the warmest, about 30°C.The weather on the coast can differ considerably from the weather inland. The coastal climate is characterised by hot summers and mild winters. The weather inland is more continental with more extreme temperatures. In the winter snow is not uncommon on higher ground in the north.

The peak tourist seasons of July and August can be quite hot, though on the coast there is often a refreshing wind. It is still warm and somewhat more relaxing to visit in June and September. Many tourist facilities close completely over the winter period, however most hotels offer a 50% discount.
