By Car
Croatia has an excellent, new single-lane motorway now reaching almost the
whole of the country. Though not officially open, (there are no tolls and few
signs), you can still use it. When driving past Porec to Pula, be sure to turn
right at the Sv. Lovrec sign to join the motorway, as signs are a little 'temporary'
in places.
Alternatively you may wish to take the bendy coast roads around the Limski
Canal; very beautiful but longer. Roads are very busy in July and August.
With a good map Croatia is easy to navigate and well sign posted. The emergency
breakdown number is 987. If involved in a collision, remember to always call
the Police on 92, however small the accident. Other useful numbers are the
Fire Brigade 93 and Ambulance 94.
Speed limits are 50 km/h in towns and 80km/h
out of town. On motorways the speed limits are 130 kph.
The drink driving limit used to be 0.05 pm, but has recently been change to
a very strict regime of zero tolerance. You must drive with your headlights
on, day or night. These laws have been recently introduced to improve road
safety.
Car hire
All major International car hire companies are represented in Croatia and have
offices both in the airports and town centres.
Avis www.avis.com/AvisWeb/home
Europcar www.europcar.com
Sixt www.e-sixt.com
Herts www.hertz.com
When hiring a car outside Croatia, e.g. Italy or Slovenia makes sure your car
hire company has stamped your hire documents, giving you permission to enter
Croatia and validating your insurance.
To hire Avis cars at Trieste airport we have found it cheaper through an Irish
company in Belfast. Contact 0035390 6627711 or via their website www.affordablecarrental-italy.com
For a reasonable charge, Parenzo car hire will transfer you from Trieste airport
to their office in Porec in a people carrier. This saves you time and having
to navigate through Italy and Slovenia by yourself. Their prices are very competitive.
Contact telephone 052 427 103, Fax 052 427 102. Parenzo, Istarskog, Razvoda
11, Porec.
Children's car seats can be expensive to hire, and are sometimes awkward to
anchor properly. Some Airlines do not count baby items i.e. pushchairs or car
seats as part of your luggage allowance, so it may be a good idea to take your
own.
